Samar Hazboun collaborated with women living in the West Bank, Palestine, who are earning their own income for her collection in the 2021 exhibition.

She also worked with the Al-Zahra Kitchen, a local enterprise run by ten women who are supporting other women in their community to learn new skills and become financially independent. For Samar, Women By Women was an eye-opening experience that meant she could meet women she wouldn’t usually have the chance to meet.

Two years ago, Khadija started volunteering as Al-Zahra Kitchen’s accountant and began baking with the other women at the enterprise. She says she enjoys being part of something, connecting with other women and learning from them. Joining the kitchen and speaking with the women there has inspired her to set up her bakery and sell cakes to relatives and friends.

In 2020, Khadija received her first commission to make a wedding cake. The whole process, completed while juggling her daily childcare and household tasks, took her about six hours. Khadija says it was a huge accomplishment for her and something she will always be proud of.

Aisha is a farmer in Hebron with her husband Ibrahim and their two sons. During the Coronavirus pandemic, Ibrahim lost his job and the family found themselves struggling to put food on the table. After receiving support from ActionAid Palestine, Aisha started to grow and sell vegetables on a piece of land on the outskirts of the city. Now, the family have another source of income and Aisha’s dream is to hire and support Palestinian women who want to work but struggle to find opportunities.
